The Colorado income tax applies to income from wages, salaries, tips, retirement, annuities, annuity payments, royalties, rental income, interest and dividends. There is no state tax on any other type of income. An individual who is employed directly is exempt from state tax on income if the total wages and salaries and all other types of compensation exceed a limit under the rules of the statute for the classification of exempt income. Colorado Tax Forms and Instructions The Colorado Income Tax law makes it possible to file a “self-employment income tax” return and claim various credits for taxes paid on self-employment income. Self-employment income includes “all income from any source with respect to employment and from employment-related business in its ordinary meaning.” The Colorado State General Assembly has authorized and established the following forms: Colorado Self-Employment Tax Return (a) for individuals who must file a separate tax return for each employee. The Colorado Tax Authority determines the filing status of all individuals. (1) Colorado Self-Employment Tax Return (a) for a resident who resides in another state, or other state and U.S. territories, and who is a professional sports team employer who has not filed a U.S. income tax return in any tax year. (2) Colorado Self-Employment Tax Return (a) for married residents filing a joint return.
