Scope and Objectives The primary objective of this publication is to provide a description of the terminology and methodology of timber inventory. Two secondary objectives are to provide a descriptive list with which to communicate the results to forestry professionals who work with timber inventories. They are also intended primarily for the forest industry user, to make a simple survey program more accessible. They may be adapted to other uses by those desiring to explain, describe and/or present information to non-forest professionals or the public. The paper is intended to be read as a guide in a forest survey program and not as definitive instructions for the use of the equipment. It is intended that the reader of this document will be able to make decisions based on the information contained therein. It does not assume any prior knowledge of the equipment or other software. Furthermore, it also does not assume a knowledge of the literature. Furthermore, it is suggested that this discussion be used as a guide in an ongoing process of research and education which develops a better understanding of the forest products and uses within the community.
