The Patient Centered Outcomes Consortium These are the standards and guidelines that provide the framework to guide patient care, and they have been developed by medical and surgical centers around the country. The Patient Centered Outcomes Consortium (PRO) consists of more than 1,000 medical centers with more than 18,000 surgical and orthopedic specialty and primary care practices that together form the largest patient-centered care ecosystem in the United States. This is the only organization that combines patients' needs and the interests of the medical community to develop patient-focused outcomes guidelines. It is a national coalition that promotes patient-centered care and provides a platform for developing consensus, evidence-based and quality health care guidelines. The group is organized by a national board of directors representing all three patient-centered care concepts: (i) accountable care organizations that deliver patients' high risk clinical information to physicians; (ii) health systems that deliver clinical management, research and care coordination through a shared value framework; and (iii) patient-oriented medical homes, which promote care coordination and collaboration among patients, their families and the health care team and provide comprehensive assessment and care management. PRO is led by independent stakeholder panels of clinical care experts and physicians that are organized by the individual centers to achieve consensus on patient-centered care. The national board has a role to play in the process in identifying, evaluating and selecting a panel of experts and the final panel of the consensus guidelines. The PRO serves the three patient-centered care concepts: accountable care organizations to share high risk patient information with physicians, health systems and patients; health systems to deliver clinical management and research, including research-based care and clinical quality, to residents and residents' families; and patient-oriented medical homes to promote care coordination while enhancing collaborative care and maximizing the family's involvement in patients' care. The PRO operates under a grant-making model. They publish an annual set of National Patient Care Outcomes (NPC) guidelines for the medical and surgical practice of accountable care organizations, the health care system and the patient-oriented medical home and other patients, as well as an annual set of Patient Centered Outcomes (PRO) guidelines for the medical practice of health care systems, the medical community and families. The NPC guidelines are widely used to guide the national adoption of the guidelines as a common standard for accountable care and clinical practices, and they are used by patients.
