Date. Reviewed. 11/30/98. MENDELSSOHN, JANET R. RE: TRANSFER, PATIENT IN ACTIVE TREATMENT. (a) On July 15, 1997, the American Academy of Orthodontists Committee on Dental Orthodontics evaluated the following written referral information from the patient: “Sincerely, [name of patient].” The following information and accompanying recommendation are offered on the basis of the following clinical considerations, which the Committee considers important when considering a change in dental treatment: (1) Patient's knowledge of the dental profession and the profession more generally; (2) Patient's education, age, health and the extent of her or his disability of mobility; (3) The ability of the patient to make an informed decision; (4) Potential changes in the patient's lifestyle; (5) The need for dental treatment; (6) Time needed to complete the treatment; and (7) Patient's ability to retain information and obtain further professional and/or financial information. (b) The oral health of the patient warrants consideration of any change in dental treatments, which may be necessary in order to meet the patient's individual and professional needs. (Source: Orthodontics and Related Information Section, Dental Information Manual, American Dental Association, Inc, 2000) (Additional resources may be located in the Orthodontics Information section of the American College of Restorers' Oral Health and Oral Health Policy Series.) The American Academy of Orthodontists offers the following information to assist dentists in providing oral health treatments to a patient in active treatment. This information is not intended to create legal advice, nor is it intended to substitute for professional medical care and treatment. The American Academy of Orthodontists believes that treatment of an adult or adolescent's full mouth and jaw should consist of a thorough oral hygiene program, including daily dental flossing and mouth washing, with attention to both the teeth and gums.
