[Back to list of topics] Kansas State Income Tax Return Kansas generally requires taxpayers to file an income tax return regardless of whether they are a resident or nonresident taxpayer. Nonresidents pay federal income taxes (federal tax liability) and the Kansas state income tax. Because Kansas has not adopted federal and state marginal tax rates, residents pay a 5.9% tax and nonresidents pay a 0.9% tax. The top rate is 13.5% for earnings in excess of 400,000. All nonresidents, whether tax filers or nonresidents of tax paid, must file a combined Kansas resident tax return. Kansas has a sales tax of 6.25%, plus an additional 1.75% on transactions that exceed 250 and a 1% on transactions above 50,000. See the Tax Information for Nonresidents of Kansas brochure and the Kansas State Income Tax page. For additional information, see the nonresidents of Kansas webpage of the Kansas Dept. of Revenue. Kansas requires taxpayers to complete a Kansas income tax return form, the Kansas Income Tax Return (KIT). The KIT may be filed for a single tax return or as many returns as a small business may have. The KIT may be filed between April 17 and December 15, depending on the filing status and whether the taxpayer is self-employed or paid employees.
