We are now past the year 2000 that one of the earliest publications for the Billfish species appeared. It is the second edition of an 8-issue series on the Pacific Striped Marlin, with our first issue being in 1990. The first 4 issues of Billfish Newsletter are available at the bottom of this web page. The Newsletter went through six printings (four for publication in the USA and two for International distribution), and after two attempts to expand worldwide distribution we went on hiatus for several years until early 2002. Due to a lack of consistent funding and the need for a new computer printer, the newsletter was reissued once more in fall 2002. The Billfish Newsletter was reissued again in February and March 2003, as well as in August 2006 with an update on the latest studies done, and a cover story from the Northwest Fishery Management Council. Billfish Newsletter #47 — Spring 2011 — Billfish and Fisheries Conservation! — New Newsletter! There was a lot of good news in the Billfish Newsletter for the spring and summer 2011 season with some other cool features. One of the better news features was the success of the research project on the effectiveness of angling gear with the Billfish. While this research was at the forefront of the efforts in the late 2000s and early 2010s to assess the effectiveness of different gear and strategies for the Billfish, the results were not to everyone's satisfaction. However, they are showing a substantial reduction in size of the Billfish, and it is now being considered a major success for all anglers, even if it is difficult to measure. Another nice item in the spring issues for 2011 will be the addition of a magazine on the Billfish to the Billfish Association Newsletter. Many years had been put in this area and the research from this project had been incorporated into our publications since the late 1980s. It would be nice to have a nice, hardcover publication of this information ready to go in the fall. We have been making a nice profit this year on our newsletter, and we'd like to continue to do so. Also, it would be good to get more of these types of publications into the general angling community to provide them with this valuable information. We hope that this newsletter will help all of us to continue our efforts to conserve these excellent fish from our lakes and streams. We also hope that it will not harm the Billfish in the long run, with the great improvements being made to their habitat and populations.
