S.A.R.C.S. Director of Human Resources, worked with their staff to schedule a presentation by Mark on Wednesday, May 12, 2009, at CU's Student Government Association (SGA) meeting at 7:00 pm. Students were encouraged to attend and ask questions of Mark during the Q&A portion of the meeting. The CSU's Executive Vice President and Provost, Mike Leach, and the CSU President, Sam Merely made comments following the presentation that the job postings, especially in the areas of Computer Science and Engineering, were not going to work and that such programs would fail in the long run because of the lack of “real world” experience. During the Q&A, Mark said, “The problem is that so-called STEM fields seem to have a lot of demand for computer scientists and engineers, but you hear a lot about the shortage of high school girls and the low grade point average of girls in those fields. So it's really hard to attract women and girls into those fields and if we are unable to attract them, we are doing a disservice to our students.” In the end of the meeting, the SGA was impressed and supportive of the job opportunities provided by Mark with both Mike Leach and Gloria Nelson complimenting his knowledge and ability to recruit in this time of need. During a short discussion at the conclusion, Mark shared a few of his own personal experiences in the areas of Computer science and Engineering. Mark asked the audience of students to join him in supporting him as he looks into starting an engineering students support group. MESA. S.A.R.C.S, along with the CU SGA, were glad to have a discussion at such a short notice about computer modeling and other science areas. CSU-Mesa Center for Science and Technology Director of Research, Dr. Michael Lillie, is the recipient of the prestigious A.C.R.E. Prize for his contributions to science, technology and society as he seeks to encourage students in STEM fields to become leaders of tomorrow. It was Dr Lillie's suggestion that CSU's SGA consider sponsoring Mark as a guest speaker through their end-of-the-year meetings. While no formal proposals had been made, the CSU-MESA Center for Science and Technology had already received several proposals for upcoming meetings to consider including a project for the annual CSU-MESA Leadership Breakfast/Party in September.
