The best time to visit the Badlands is said to be August-September, as spring can be rainy (where the trails turn to clay and mud) and the mid summer temps can reach over 100. We went in early September and the weather was amazing--hot, but not unbearable.
Bring lots of water; the dry air can cause dehydration quicker than you think, and there is nowhere to fill up on water in the badlands. There is also no shade, so wear a hat and sunscreen. It's preferable to have four wheel drive and good clearance since you'll be driving on rugged dirt roads.
For the Badlands, I recommend starting with a stop at the Visitor Center for the Minuteman Missile Historic Site just outside the Northeast Entrance to Badlands NP -- good history stuff. Then proceed through the Northeast Entrance to drive the Badlands Loop Drive.
Many visitors only experience the park by driving the Badlands Loop Road in the North Unit, which sightseers can complete in an hour. To truly experience this park, however, visitors should plan to stay a minimum of two days and go beyond the main road to enjoy more of what this iconic destination has to offer.

If you only have one day to experience Badlands National Park, here's a solid plan: Take Interstate 90 from Rapid City and stop at the Minuteman Missile Visitor Center. Visit the Ben Reifel Visitor Center in the North Unit and watch the park movie. Check out the paleontology lab, if you're visiting during the summer.
