Montana schools For many educators, the classroom is a sanctuary—an environment not only where students succeed in school but also where they can relax, socialize, and even grow in meaningful ways. We want school life to be fun, creative, and full of energy. In Montana schools, we strive for these very outcomes, and this is especially the case with the Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Although students with hearing impairments and the Deaf and hard-of-hearing have very different needs, the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind was created in the early 1970s by then-Principal John Eben. The mission of the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind is to provide the needs of hearing impaired students and the Deaf and hard-of-hearing teachers and staff. As part of the curriculum, the Montana School has an education program designed to enable students with hearing impairments to become active learners, while at the same time recognizing the differences between hearing and difficult-of-hearing students. The Montana School supports hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing staff that work with the Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, as well as the teachers, administrators and support staff that work with hearing-impaired students. Students can choose from many programs to choose from, including the Hearing-Impaired Education Program (HIP), the Hearing-Difficult Program (HIP), and the Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing Education Program (DEEP). The Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing Program includes the full school day and all electives, as well as after school program and special events. Students who have been hearing impaired from birth are encouraged to participate in the education program. As well as learning a full range of activities, students can earn and receive credits for participating in an after school program, special event, or other enrichment opportunities. Students may have the opportunity to make a special visit to see a hearing impaired family member or family member who is not here in person. If this is the case, and you wish to see them in person, please contact me; I will see that a special visit can get made. Other opportunities to learn to read, write, and speak are also provided at the School, including many courses taught by hearing people who are not part of the staff. Some students may attend after school programs, such as the Speech Development Program.
