The Institute will provide science teachers a more in-depth understanding of water quality, a better understanding of the relationship between water and agriculture, and a better understanding of how to teach the subject in their lessons. According to the AWA, “a new, more objective definition is needed that will help parents, administrators, and other teachers understand and incorporate the proper use of water in children's lives and that will also help ensure that public education programs are based on actual scientific research.” Both Institutes will be held on December 26–27 at the Science Museum of Minnesota. In February 2006, in cooperation with the American Water Works Association, I took a tour through the Minnesota State Water Studies Center. The tour was a fantastic opportunity to meet some staff, view the lab where they conduct their water testing, as well as observe them running their sampling and treatment facilities. A recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune revealed that the AREA was considering a new policy that might put the drinking water of thousands of families at risk if it goes into effect in 2006.  The Minnesota Water Resources Department is considering implementing a new policy that would permit the state to treat, treat, and treat some more, to keep water from unsafe levels. I had a number of folks send me questions regarding this proposed policy. The policy would allow the state to treat up to 100,000 more gallons of water every day in the state than they had previously been allowed.  A group of Iowans is concerned the new policy is not safe since they are using much more water and already have experienced some cases of water unsafe levels. Another group is concerned the new policy will increase agricultural use and that agriculture is one of the state's largest sources of clean water.  That is also what the policy would allow the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to use.  Those are just a few possible concerns. There is a petition available to register your opinion on why the state should have the right to treat more and treat it a bit differently from the rest of the water.
