Frequency. Frequency, or IT, is the frequency, or range, of energy in the radio spectrum, and the method of measuring such frequency. The frequency is usually expressed as a number of Hertz (or Hz). A natural frequency that is in the range of the human hearing. The fundamental frequency of any sound is the frequency it produces when played at its highest (most fundamental) amplitude. Bands. The number of frequency bands within a radio frequency receiver based on the manufacturer's specifications. Most receivers have a maximum of 6.3 of these bands depending upon the manufacturer of the radio receiver. If this is not reached, the radio noise and other radio interference will affect the radio receiver and result in significant interference. There are a range of frequencies within a band known as a frequency range. Some frequencies (like FM) are “high frequency” while others (like AM) are “low frequency.” To achieve a higher frequency in the radio spectrum, a transmitter is designed to be placed in lower levels so that it can cover a larger frequency range. The lower the frequency range that is reached, the smaller the total bandwidth. Frequency Range. An imaginary line drawn at the point on a frequency spectrum (see Fig. 2) that is equal to the size of the receiver's antenna (or band) (see Fig. 3). This is known as the frequency range. For example, if the frequency range of a receiver is 4.3 MHz, then the size of the antenna would be equal to one unit on the frequency scale. Modulation. Amplitude modulation uses amplitude changes to alter the amplitude of a radio signal. Analog (A) and Digital (D) Modes. Analog (A) and digital (D) modes are complementary methods of transmission, that is, two radio waves are sent in a single transmission. However, there are slight differences in signal characteristics and transmission schemes of analog and digital modes, making an analog/digital system difficult to analyze by modern instrumentation.
