Although most motorcycle riders wear helmets, the helmet-appearance difference is not always apparent (e.g., black riders may appear to ride better and be less impaired because they are more likely to wear a bright-colored helmet). In general, black riders are more likely than riders of other colors to be rear-ended by drivers of other vehicles, with one-third of fatal motorcycle crashes involving other vehicles. In one case study, black men wearing high-visibility vests were much less likely to crash compared with white men wearing the same vests. In addition to motorcycle riders in their 20s with long-term exposure to alcohol, another cohort of motorcyclists is defined by the use of illicit drugs. In 1992 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted the largest survey of motorcycle riders ever conducted, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The study involved interviewing 4,621 adult motorcyclists, 603 male and 404 female. Participants were classified as “marijuana” users if they had used marijuana on at least one occasion in the previous 12 months, or had used marijuana within the past year. The survey also asked about alcohol, cocaine, and heroin use, and other drug use, as well as sexual behaviors such as oral sex, vaginal intercourse, and homosexual intercourse. Marijuana use (0 or less than once a month; and 1–4 times a month) was associated with a higher proportion of respondents reporting current (past 12 months) and lifetime (past 30 days) marijuana use of 5–12.9 percent, 6–24 percent, and 30–49.9 percent, respectively. Although these numbers are small, they are sufficient to suggest that, among young adult motorcyclists, marijuana use contributes to a significant proportion of the alcohol problem and the risk of motorcyclist crashes. Among males the percentage of users who reported past 30-day alcohol use was 2.4 percent and lifetime use was 30.6 percent. Among females the percentages were 2.0 percent and 7.7 percent. This is not dissimilar from previous estimates from the same study, which indicated that the use of alcohol was a stronger contributor to alcohol problems among female marijuana users (15). This study also reported that nearly 9 percent of male users, and about 25 percent of females, had ridden at least once a month while using cocaine or heroin. About 2 percent of both males and females who had ever ridden once or more a month while using cocaine or heroin also reported using marijuana.
