More This page will describe the process for using the Baaed program, the requirements for admission and graduation, and the application requirements. Prerequisites The Baaed program requires the completion of (1) four semesters in college credit, (2) two hours in computer engineering-related classes which satisfy the Computer Engineering major and three additional hours in a junior or senior honors course offered in a computer engineering department or in a graduate level computer engineering department or program (subject to the approval of faculty), and (3) the required Senior Design project in a junior or senior honors class which satisfies the required undergraduate project requirement. Additional courses may be required of students planning to pursue an engineering degree or a related field (such as computer architecture). If you are unsure of your degree plans as well as your requirements for graduate study, please contact: and indicate your major(s); or call the Baaed office at and ask to interview the director, or ask the director for information on a specific junior or senior honors course. Courses and Courses with Other Concentrations Most courses offered at Berkeley, UC San Diego, the University of Southern California, and the University of California at Irvine require a course from a computer science or information science concentration. These courses must be listed separately in the department's catalog. A course may be excluded from the required concentration if the instructor approves an appropriate alternative approach or the student completes an approved prerequisite. Note: The Baaed is also available to students in the Computer Engineering degree who have one of the following concentrations at UC Irvine or UC San Diego: (in alphabetical order) Industrial Design and Manufacturing, Information Architecture and Systems, or Digital Humanities. Senior Design Project The senior design project has two components--a comprehensive project proposal and a comprehensive description of the student's thesis. The senior design project, however, is not defined in any one unit of work. Instead, a section of the thesis will describe the project as a whole. The project proposal describes the student's intellectual interest in designing solutions for the problems posed to the student by the program. The description includes a discussion of the particular technological innovations sought, the context in which this is important, the role the project would make in the field, and the methods used by the designer as well as alternative approaches for achieving the objectives.
