I will also discuss the process I used to generate the various paintings. This is an attempt at synthesis, which would, in my opinion, describe my art practice. 2.1 Abstract Painting is one of the most challenging and fascinating forms of art and should not be dismissed simply because of its low degree of success on the art market. There is a very real and vital history that surrounds the practice. 2.2 Surface and Composition Surface painting is about the physical interaction between the artist and the subject, and is thus intimately concerned with the way materials and forms are used to create the desired effect. Abstract painting in particular has taken advantage of the recent progress in the ability to use the computer, and even the microscope to produce the most interesting surface effects. Although the subject for both techniques is the subject of debate, I will begin with surface and end with composition. 2.3 Digital Art Since digital artwork is not subject to the influences which lead to the traditional process, there is a tremendous range of possible outcomes when an image is created on a computer's screen. My project has no particular interest in any particular kind of abstract work. We have seen images, such as these: 2.3.1 Abstracted Objects I chose to display some images I have presented here, so that a reader can see what I am talking about, especially as they relate to their immediate context. Although surface and composition may be involved, the emphasis is still upon the physical experience of painting. When I paint I always start with a brush, and I never stop. It is my nature to keep going, even when the subject is finished. In the last several years I have been experimenting a lot with the computer. Using the screen to paint or use the mouse to create new compositions is no different from using my traditional pen and paper method. 2.3.2 Textures Another image. I chose the texture for the two pieces in this section because it represents an entirely alternative use of surface, although with a very physical relationship to the painting. 2.3.3 Digital Composition My recent experimentation has shown me that it is the concept and form that I like best. I have been thinking a lot about the way objects and surfaces can be represented visually, and that process is being represented almost immediately.
