Sanchez is just one of several low-lying coastal communities that have no viable way to receive drinking water, and will be the focus of this project. The project is expected to build a water purification plant to enable communities to benefit from the benefits of the rain, and to meet future environmental concerns relating to sea level rise by reducing the release of nutrient pollution from the nearby estuaries. This facility will operate as a partnership between local communities, the University of Toledo, and the international engineering firm of Bechtel, Inc. (). The University of Toledo will partner solely with the Bechtel team at the project. The project and associated engineering project will bring more than 1 million to the local economy, and nearly 60 engineering students will be involved, bringing a high caliber of engineering talent and the benefits of engineering education to local students. The University of Toledo's first-ever International Design Competition The University of Toledo is the first nationally accredited, graduate engineering university within the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Toledo, Ohio to offer the International Design Competition in its Honors College program — the first such program in the nation! The Design Competition is a first-of-its kind program that provides a rigorous framework for students to create unique, original, and compelling designs for their honors thesis projects. The students create a fully-realized research proposal based on an initial concept or model and collaborate with mentors and professors to develop the concept to its logical conclusion. The design team will travel to Toledo for the Grand Design Conference and participate in an international competition in November at the Port of Toledo. The Design Competition is designed for students in the College of Engineering to become design professionals. It is not a degree program. Students will need to be members of the College of Engineering Honors College to be eligible to participate. Students can become design professionals with this program. The competition will take place from November 25 through December 15. The design competition is an exciting opportunity for students to learn the skills and knowledge that can transform their career.
