The goal of creating a community board is not simply to give children who come into contact with this school the opportunity to talk about its problems but also to develop strategies to change the way the school is managed so that it better serves the needs of families and children and contributes to the well-being of our community. The problems at the elementary school of St. Nicholas Elementary School and the inadequate responses of the school's management have caused a great deal of alarm to parents. Many parents have said that “the more education you have, the better off you are” and the management of the school has seemed to agree with this view. In my opinion and experience with both children and parents, children who are exposed to the problems at the school can experience fear, anxiety and anxiety for days thereafter. Families are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of their children, and many have suffered losses as a result of this continuing issue. The issues of violence and bullying in the community cannot be overlooked in the circumstances that have put the school in this situation. Many parents have contacted me privately about the school's handling of such issues, and several of the parents who contacted me expressed their desire to meet with the school's management to discuss strategies to address the ongoing issues. Although a community board has not been established through the creation of this board, it is my understanding that a community board committee has been created to deal at this time with the issues that have caused the community to have such a concern about how the school is being operated. There appears to be a desire by many parents to meet with the school's management, but we feel that we must seek to meet with the management first in order to explore options for the benefit of the community. We are happy to engage the school's management in our conversations, but we cannot and therefore cannot meet with the school to discuss the problems unless you first agree to meet first, or we can hold an open school board forum (see below). I do have some concerns regarding the use of funds from a city-operated fund to help finance the community board. As a general matter, I do not think that using these funds to establish a community board can be justified. This money should be used for the improvement of St. Nicholas Elementary School.
