We performed a retrospective clinical study comparing clinical characteristics of nucleated malignant melanoma with and without nucleation between 2001 and 2009. Data obtained were reviewed in a subset of the study cohort. Results: In our population-based cohort, there were 905 patients with a diagnosis of cancer of the veal tract with or without nucleation, of whom 434 (82%) had an objective response to treatment (stage IV or greater), 100 (25%) were diagnosed as having partial response, and 20 (8%) were diagnosed as having a poor clinical response. In addition, there were a few patients with an excised lesion, which was detected and removed before nucleation. We also reviewed clinical reports for 439 patients with an initial diagnosis of malignant melanoma with nucleation, 857 of whom had undergone surgery, 393 (66%) of whom had been diagnosed as having partial response, and 467 (80%) of whom had a good response to treatment. This cohort comprised 864 patients with an objective response to treatment (stage IV or greater), of whom 461 (86%) had completed treatment, 98 (34%) of whom were alive at the end of the study period (median follow-up time, 18 months). Conclusion: Our data suggest that in patients presenting with endovascular malignant melanoma of the veal tract, nucleation may be an effective clinical strategy in the management of the disease without adverse consequences.
