He has extensive experience in all areas of astrophysics, including astrophysics and astronomy education. He has been in leadership roles at the University of California, Berkeley, and at NASA, where he has served as Director of Advanced Mission Operations. And he has been on a number of committees and working groups within his field, including the Council of the Astronomical Society and the Committee on Research and Engineering. He has also served as a member of the National Academy of Engineering Science and Technology. He has a wide variety of interests, including cosmology, astrophysics, and cosmology education. This is very exciting and would seem to be an excellent choice, and a very well-deserved award. The award also represents the dedication of all the Staci group members in the recent past. We thank each of these men and women who have been involved in this program over these many years; we wish them all well. The Staci staff would also like to thank the many members of the news media who have covered what has become one of the world's top astronomy journals, with a large and diverse audience of interested readers, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. The Staci staff especially would like to thank Richard S. Allen, the news editor, Robert C. Meadow, the news producer, and Tom F. Edmundson, the news editor, for their many hours of dedicated work. A URA. (May 1997-Jun 1998) The first issue of the new quarterly newsletter SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE was released on June 26, 1997. While some news was given, the majority of the information concerned Staci's work with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, the mission for this year. Hubble made its first public appearance with a successful fly-by of a comet. The mission to take a look at the comet and photograph it from deep space, known as Rosetta, was called “Cemetery Comet Segment,” or “Comet Segment.” This first-of-a-kind Hubble mission was to be only the fourth science mission to explore the comet. This is one of the greatest achievements ever made by any astronomer! The Staci staff had a difficult time preparing for the event which I reported on in the May issue. In spite of the challenges, there was great excitement when it was discovered Comet Segment had made a complete flyby on August 2nd. With the success of Comet Segment, Hubble launched into a new phase of NASA's observatory program.
