The NOEL Research Area includes six labs—Structural Testing of Buildings, Building Materials,
Structural Analysis of Structures, Structural Analysis of Structures and Materials,
Structure and Materials, and Materials. The laboratory is divided into an experimental and a
science and engineering section. The experimental building section (the RAB) carries out
structural analysis of buildings; structural analysis of components, including
piers, beams, and trusses; and, analyses of composite steel columns. The RAB laboratory can
predict the effects of seismic forces on the structure or structure components. The laboratory is
also investigating the influence of structural systems and design on earthquake effects on
building construction and in the surrounding environment, particularly the site and
earthquake ground surface. The RAB can also develop and test experimental seismic response
molding for response testing in real site conditions. In addition, the lab has extensive
analysis capability for the materials' industry in an area of research called Structure & Material
Analysis.
The laboratory is divided into six units. Three are experimental: Laboratory Development (LLD),
Structural Testing of Buildings II (STB), and Structural Testing of Buildings III (STB-III).
These laboratories have been in operation for many years and have contributed greatly to the State-of-the-
Art in civil engineering at Newark.
Experimental Lab Development
The laboratory has the capabilities to conduct small-scale structural simulations and
computer models of existing systems to determine their effects at specified sites, or more complex
simulations.
The laboratory includes all the standard electronic tools for developing and testing structural
simulations. Examples of some of these technologies are:
1. Simulations for steel, steel structural assemblies;
2. Simulations for composite structural systems using C, D, and G systems of structural elements; and,
3. Simulations of composite components.
Structural Testing of Buildings II
The LLD is the primary structural test lab. The LLD is a high-performance steel-reinforced
frame test lab capable of performing large-scale structural testing of steel structures.
The LLD can perform testing of all kinds of materials including cold-formed parts, and
steel frame assemblies.
