Each individual plant of this genus is related to the next one in that genus in a number of ways. The most distant relationships occur by means of a type of tricolor. It is thought that the relationship is reciprocal, although research indicates that the Panacea species and relatives possess an unbroken family tree. The Panacea belongs in the family of Fagaceae which contains approximately 90 species of shrubs and ferns. A number of the Panacea species produce dye and dye-producing compounds and a number have been shown to be important in a variety of coastal ecosystem processes. The most famous of the Panacea is the famous red cedar (Trains Aubrey L.). This is a species of which very little exists today.
