For other use, contact Fish and Wildlife Services, Pacific Islands Forestry Division, Hawaii, Phone, ; Fax, The Cyan ea grimesiana is an endangered plant endemic to the southern Baja California coast of the United States (U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office, 1999). In the springtime, it blooms in large, lacy green ferns and shrubs. Its foliage contains a reddish-purple dye that is used for dyeing clothing (K. Martin, personal communication). The plant belongs to a genus of closely related shrubs and ferns called the Panacea (a subfamily of the Fagaceae). It is native to the subtropical regions of North America and is a rare component of a variety of coastal ecosystems that occur on tropical, temperate, and polar islands and coasts. The Panacea family contains roughly 100 species, more than a hundred of which occur on the Hawaiian Islands. Each individual plant of this genus is related to the next one in that genus in a number of ways. The most distant relationships occur by means of a type of tricolor. It is thought that the relationship is reciprocal, although research indicates that the Panacea species and relatives possess an unbroken family tree. The Panacea belongs in the family of Fagaceae which contains approximately 90 species of shrubs and ferns. A number of the Panacea species produce dye and dye-producing compounds and a number have been shown to be important in a variety of coastal ecosystem processes. The most famous of the Panacea is the famous red cedar (Trains Aubrey L.). This is a species of which very little exists today. The ferns are a group of close relatives which are native to Baja California. Legalese ferns are commonly used for houseplants when they are not the only ones available.
