She also reported that more than 3000 people attended the reunion (about the same number that attended the 2009 Alumni Day in Baltimore), and 100 people were married during the event. The keynote speaker and master for the reunion was Mr. Donald L. Miller, President of the Institute for Basic Research on Cognition which he co-founded. There were also talks on the philosophy of research and in particular research related to the psychology of learning and memory. There have been many changes over the years, with new areas of research being opened up and some old areas being discontinued to make way for new developments. The theme that the 9th Reunion was concerned to promote was collaboration. There was a strong emphasis on promoting the concept of “reunionization”, a term coined by the late Dr. Gary Libyan, Ph.D., who spoke about the need for a “bicycle of friendship” of the Rust, M.I.C, Alumni. In addition, a new term was coined named “M.I.C”. Mr. Miller spoke about the concept, using the image of a motor in a car. The motor is the “Rust”, which is the group of friends who gather and work toward a common goal. The motor is also the “M.I.C”, which is the group of research and service opportunities; both types of connections. The keynote speaker said that although the concept has a bit of a stodgy look, “we must develop a sense of “bicycle of friendship” of research and service at Rust and M.I.C reunions.” After the keynote speakers, the main event was held from 3-5pm Friday night at the Rust Student Center. There were workshops on topics ranging from the research of the reunion and its role in mentoring, to the development of the annual Alumni Day, to how to run a successful reunion, to using the current website. Some of the more interesting talks that took place included: The current Rust Student Center webpage (the old one was pretty good, but was too large) — The “Rust and M.I.C” logo was created by Kevin Blythe as part of his master's thesis at University of Central Florida in 2001. The logo is a modified version of the M.I.C logo. The logo is used on various things like the “Rust” logo. There is a “rust” for each of the alumni, with a “M.I.
