On Tuesday, the FBI announced an arrest in New York for the person behind a global cocaine smuggling operation. An indictment was obtained charging Omar Gebre-Tawil, 32, of Staten Island, New York, with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine base (crack). A search of Gebre-Tawil's home in the South Shore section of Staten Island revealed 2.2 million of cocaine, 3.6 million in cash, and a variety of other narcotics. The investigation also revealed two prior arrests that involved illegal cocaine trafficking into New York and Florida. In June 2010, Gebre-Tawil and a co-defendant named Mohammed Ali Their were each arrested on federal drug trafficking charges after police officers were tipped off to the pair. Their was also the subject of a U.S. Department of Justice arrest warrant. According to court documents, he has been in New York since at least 2003 and in Tampa since 2004, where he operated illegal drug laboratories and met with people involved in international cocaine trafficking organizations. In April of last year, the FBI and Tampa Bay police executed a search warrant at Their's apartment on S. Bay Street and arrested him. When confronted by investigators, Their said he was working as a courier to send marijuana from New York City to Tampa. He would then pick up a bundle of marijuana at a warehouse in Tampa. From there, he would transport the bundles to other locations where he would cut off the bundles and hide them.
