The engine has an excellent starting response which is also aided by the fact that the engine has a light but reliable crankcase ventilation system which is not subject to the problems encountered with air pollution-generating vehicles. The engine can be started by engine start by hand using a set of short and high frequency starter motor cranks and a short start rod in place of a starter motor which would normally be present. The spark plug or spark ignition can be ignited by hand using a special tool known as “The starter rod burner”. This tool is normally not used with high power engines with starter motors because the starter motor is too large for ignition by hand. The starter rod burner has 3 prongs, but only 2 are needed when starting at low ignition setting. The engine responds well, even when starting at ignition setting 2 or below and this shows that the air cleaning system has a fairly good job. When starting at high ignition setting — typically setting 4 or 5 — the engine responds very well but does require more attention than that normally necessary. The induction system is equipped with an air cleaner which is capable of removing up to 40% of the free air in a closed chamber of an engine — approximately 12 cubic feet — the majority of this being the fine air that enters the air cleaner in the form of the intake system of the engine. The air cleaner has two main purposes: to remove some air in the intake system so that there is a better air gap between the air cleaner and the throttle plates which provide air for the combustion process and the first stage of the air cleaner which is intended to remove contaminants from the throttle plates. The air cleaner, when in operation, removes contaminants by passing them through a device to be described later in this document. The air cleaner in operation works by passing air from below the throttle plates through a small intake duct. The air passes through a small intake venturi, which then exits the throttle plates. It is in the exhaust of the intake duct that the second section of the air cleaner is located. This is the “venturi” which is located above the throttle plates and passes air from below the throttle plates under high pressure to the inlet of the valve on the intake cylinder. The engine starts and starts well with this system running. The engine is capable of running on clean air.
