In this thesis we propose the idea of a powerful yet easy to use Eclipse-based IDE to compile and link languages. The key feature is an Eclipse-based tool which lets the user create, edit and execute Java applications, as well as link these programs. We provide the first working examples of a new Eclipse-based IDE, which is based on the Eclipse Linking Library (ELL), the core library which ships with Eclipse (but was never designed for the task, since it is targeted at the Java Virtual Machine's JRE and not for programming). While the use of the ELL is not required to perform the tasks that will be done in the application, this tool helps to overcome the difficulties that the new IDEs have had with the Eclipse Linking Library. The IDE will feature the support of the ELL and the ability of executing compiled programs. In this way programs and links will be generated and linked using the Eclipse Linking Library and can easily be shared among groups of workers. The IDE will also support the generation of executables, linked libraries, and run-time libraries. Moreover, it will be possible to easily generate an application which executes at runtime. This is in contrast to the more recent IDEs that only support the compilation of programs in Java. Thus, an Eclipse-based IDE will improve Java applications considerably, not only on the side of programmers but also on the side of software vendors.
