C Department of Animal Science, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79413 USA Keywords Growth Restriction Inhibition Maternal/Paternal Behavioral Physiology in Fetal and Placental Development Introduction The mechanisms by which the nutritional status, growth hormone secretion, metabolic rate, energy metabolism, and neurobiology of pregnant mothers, fetuses, and their offspring affect intrauterine metabolic conditions during pregnancy are unclear. In part, this is due to the scarcity of experimental data on this topic. Recent evidence suggests that the nutritional status and metabolic state of the pregnant mother do not have a direct effect on the fetus and newborn, and the fetus does not directly affect maternal metabolism. Nonetheless, evidence suggests that maternal nutritional state, including maternal stress levels, may exert maternal effects on fetal and neonatal nutrition and metabolic state through mechanisms that are distinct from the effects of fetal and placental hormones. Evidence from rodent studies and other model organisms suggests that maternal stress levels, such as physical punishment, may negatively affect fetal and newborn growth and development (Morton, 2000). These effects may have the effect of reducing the fetus' or newborn's glucose requirement by causing a rapid fall in blood glucose concentrations during development. As maternal stress levels continue during pregnancy, maternal stress may increase fetal demand for glucose because of increases in oxidative phosphorylation in muscle, brain, and adipose tissue (Morton, 2000) and impair maternal metabolism, causing a rise in intrauterine growth retardation, fetal abnormalities, and an increased incidence of macroscopic (MacDonald, Katowice, & Henning, 1999). There is also evidence that maternal glucocorticoid exposure may increase the metabolic rate of her fetus (Barrels and Barthes, 1987; Wills, 1976). However, this may have an intermediate or no effect on fetal metabolism, and the maternal glucocorticoid exposure may also have a negative effect on the mother, such as reducing the quality and quantity of milk. Although the exact mechanisms by which nutrient deprivation affects fetal and placental growth are still not fully understood, there are several lines of evidence that suggest that maternal caloric restriction may affect the fetus and neonate during pregnancy and lactation directly. Because maternal caloric intake is largely in the form of fat in the form of milk, the hypothesis that maternal caloric restriction may interfere with the metabolic processes of the fetus and neonate through the generation of ketones or glycogen is well-supported.
