HOBBS, M.A.: CREST, 7 May 2007; Auckland, RNZ News, 5 June 2007. THE PROJECT: The Project is to examine the socio-economic status of a sample of residents of New Zealand's Auckland Region, to gain a better idea on the area's local environment and socio-economic features. The socio-economic status of the area is used as the key indicator in this study, and is broken down into five components; income, employment and earnings, residential areas, schools and housing. As such, the socio-economic status of a person is divided into income (recompiled), school status and housing. The area examined is the Auckland Region of New Zealand. The study has a sample area of 2340.00 km2 and contains 1260.50 people from the four study areas which account for 99.30% of the total number of people in the area. The sample data was obtained from the Social Equity and Statistics Agency in November 2006. PROCEDURES An initial contact was made to households in the study area. This includes contacting members of the household at their local post code. To increase the coverage, a total of 1150.00 people from one of the study areas were contacted by telephone and email, and a total of 676.00 people from these two research units were contacted by email. The sample size is based on the research unit size. Once the initial contact has been made, the contact was established for an initial 20 days. During the initial contact, a questionnaire was collected which covered socio-economic status, attitudes to housing, and the level of social contact. The data collected included demographics such as gender, age group, language, marital status and ethnicity. All those contacted in the initial contact were eligible for the follow-up survey.
