The GLOBALVIEW-CO2 dataset is a part of the NOAA/EARL Coupled Modelling Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) ensemble. The dataset was calibrated and used in one of the CMIP5 simulations (). GLOBALVIEW-CO2 is a data product based on more than 2000 global and regional observations and observations from additional data sources. These include data from space-borne and satellites as well as from ground-based monitors. The data are obtained as measurements of the atmospheric CO2 concentration over several decades on a regional, monthly and daily timescale. These observations are processed with highly accurate models of the global atmospheric systems and then transformed into monthly and daily observations. The data are presented on a grid of 3° by 7°. From the data, the global and regional CO2 concentration are calculated on decade, half-decade and year time scales. The monthly and daily CO2 data are generated by interpolated from time-varying atmospheric properties. The decade and half-decade time scales are defined as the time span between two significant global or regional CO2 emissions and concentrations. For each decade and half-decade time period a grid of three observation data points is chosen as the reference period. Three grid boxes, each of 3° x 7°, are chosen. In each grid box, the three grid points are selected on the basis of their annual and monthly mean atmospheric surface temperature values, respectively. The reference data were generated at the start of each year using the KISS model output of the year 2000 (EARL Technical Reference Manual 8.8,) or the HADST model output of 2004 ().
