There was found a considerable degree of inaccuracy. Our first observation was that the observed shape and texture of forms varied in form, and so did the observer's belief that he perceived such forms. This change in the original perceived forms in form, however, did not occur in response to any definite mental stimuli. Neither did it occur with any great frequency. It may be remarked that the degree of variation in the form of perceived forms appeared to be as great as that found in all other psychophysical data. As a next step the effect of mental stimuli was to be studied. The form and texture of forms of which the mental stimulus had been a strong influence were compared with the forms as drawn by the observer from a fixed position. The experiment was repeated with a change in the visual stimuli. The results were similar to the former, but were of greater accuracy. It was apparent that the mental stimulus did not alter the actual shape, texture, or color, but rather influenced the perceptual organization of forms perceived in a mental image. The results have led to the inference that the mental stimulus has an almost constant influence upon the perceptual organization of the forms in a visual imagery state. The experiment has also been used to show the influence of mental stimuli upon the perception of other visual stimuli. The present study deals with the extent of the effect of the mental image in the reproduction of visual figures, that is, how the mental stimulus affects the perception of the form represented in the image. As in other studies of the reproduction of visual stimuli we may assume that the mental image is a mental image of the form represented. When the mental representation is altered in various ways, the reproduced form is usually changed to give a more perfect copy (see Fig, 1). Fig. 1 View of Figure (A) and the reproduced form. The experiment consisted in presenting to the subjects a form to be reproduced. The objects had to be formed in space to be seen. The forms were to have a certain form in the original, and were also to be seen as a unit. A number of the forms were to be presented in random order. The form for which this form had been chosen is in the lower half of Fig. 1. The forms were drawn by a subject without any specific training, which, of course, has been shown in previous studies (see, e.g., H. W. H. Schmidt, Science vol. 12, no. 12, pages 1269 to 1271) to give much better results.
