This was the catalyst that inspired Canada to take a close look at MST. In the five years since the inception of our multi regional network in British Columbia and Yukon, the approach is being replicated across North America in several regions. With many positive outcomes in our communities, and a lot of learning to do, we wanted to share this success with the American public. One-Step Forward — Lessons Learned from a Randomized Study of Multi Systemic Therapy in Canada The randomized controlled trials in the United States were all small. Of these, one study, of six participants and one treatment program, proved to be the most influential in establishing MST. This study was conducted by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. It demonstrated an overall 5.6 point reduction in youth offenses between a control group (n=5) and the intensive (n=6) group. It followed the basic principles of MST: 1. Every group (MST or control) will be different in that, when compared to their uninvolved peers, participants in the MST group commit fewer crimes, and 2. Group participation is the key to success, whether through the individualized treatment approach or facilitated group support. The study was a pilot, and after only three of the 10-week treatment sessions a majority of the group had gone home and there was no longer any change seen. The researchers were able to show the importance of MST in small numbers of people and that the group would need to replicate the results in larger numbers of kids, and with an intensive group treatment approach if they are to continue to see results. A second study did not show an effect, but again the results were not able to be replicated. The third study, of five group participants and two controls was much better at showing that group work really does matter. The results were also replicated, but this group was much larger than the others, and had a more experienced group leader. In general, all three were supportive of the concept of multi region group treatment, and the results showed that these systems can be applied to groups in other regions. We learned some important things from this study: 1. Treatment is effective when the group is supported by the individual, in a group environment. 2. Group member feedback does influence the outcome of group members as they attempt to improve. 3. Group members are a critical component in improving the impact of treatment, as they are better able than individual members to make the necessary adjustments to improve the outcome. 4.
