I have worked on a lot of projects like this over the years, I have worked on the development and deployment of mobile diagnostic technologies, I have assisted in the development of a mobile system for the rapid diagnosis of the diseases of the breast and colorectal, and I have performed large-scale mammography in a variety of settings, sometimes for the purpose of screening for cancers such as breast cancer. My first research project, funded by an NIH grant, was involved in the development and deployment of a mobile mammography system. I now work to develop a similar system for mammography, particularly in high-risk areas, such as large hospitals, teaching hospitals where the diagnosis of breast cancer is often difficult or impossible, and women who receive treatment for breast cancer and the potential for developing breast cancer should be informed. The idea of mammography reminder systems began when my colleague Dr. David Discarding, Director of the Program for Women, Infants and Children in Breast and Colorectal Disease at New York University Medical Center, suggested that my team and I explore mammography detection in a larger system. The project will investigate a variety of options for a mammography reminder system, including the use of Bluetooth wireless technology or other cellular technologies to send reminders by radio or telephone signal to a particular area; whether and how an area can be used for remote monitoring from a computer; and the need for additional hardware and software applications to support the system. Project Scope: The primary focus of this work is developing a programmable, mobile, and easy-to-install application for mammography detection. This work may involve the development of a mobile system using wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, as an adjunct to breast/colorectal cancer detection, or as a replacement for existing technology. While the research may not extend to the full implementation of the programmable mobile system, the work may provide the required skills to design a programmable system that will support a large-scale deployment. The project will also research whether a wireless infrastructure can exist for mammography data retrieval, where the appropriate and reliable software and hardware support for the retrieval of mammography data exists. Furthermore, I will explore the feasibility of using wireless technologies for other purposes, such as rapid notification of an emergency (e.g., a home fire or traffic accident). This technology could be a means to give residents, staff, and visitors in public and private buildings the ability to detect breast cancer, including in a remote location such as at an emergency room.
