This gentleman looked like a runner, but I didn't recognize him. I was getting worried, because I thought that maybe his injury from the marathon had gotten too severe, so I asked him what was wrong with him. He said that his Achilles had given out, and it hurt him a lot when he had to push his legs. His daughter was in his arms. I had seen this type of scene many times before. As a kid, I would see old folks and their kids at the finish line, and they would say things like “This can't be my grandson, it's just a kid, how could it take out his Achilles? I don't understand it!” I'm sure we all can relate to them thinking this, as the injuries are very painful and debilitating, and they don't know what to do. We found out that the older gentleman's daughter was an elderly woman who used to be a marathon runner. The grandmother was trying to keep up, trying to keep up with her aging grandmother as her Achilles would give out from the strain. They were both well-supported by friends and family at home, but it was a real struggle to keep up. We thought that maybe it was a sign that the marathon was getting too much and that we needed to start looking for new races. I went over to the old gentleman to have a chat and asked him if he wanted to be a part of the recovery group. He jumped at the opportunity, and I have seen him since at many races, and he has been doing great, running and supporting his old lady. But his Achilles had not recovered, and he felt bad and angry seeing all the other runners around the stadium. A runner approached him and told him to stop, that her son, a runner, had gotten hurt and needed one of their support teams to keep up. The son was crying that he was going to have to drop out, and he was angry. When I saw him in the water, he had the same expression. I said to him, “You want to drop out? I'll let you. It'll be okay.” He smiled at me and shook his head and went right on running with his mother and father. When he got to the stadium, the mother and father said that I had been amazing, and they were going to tell their story to you. I knew something was going on when the mother kept talking to me about her son and his pain. She said that she couldn't go out and run on the course.
