Some see this as a rich landscape, but others dismiss it because it is a “flat” area. I agree that it is very flat. The only reason for its flatness is that nature has given it a high relief which causes the land to flatten a bit as the land level rises. Other people argue that the valleys and the ridging is evidence of glaciation but to me this is an oversimplification. Glaciation is a process that can occur for a variety of reasons. This valley and those that go down its sides might have eroded because of past glacial activity; however, it also is a glacial valley with tundra vegetation which was present in the area at the time of deposition. This also is a type of glaciation that occurs only in small areas (which is what we see with the Sacramento Mountains). What I'm getting at is that there is a wide variety of possible causes of the ridging and valleys within the Sacramento Mountains, but that it could also have been a normal process at certain times in the area's past. The “mountain tops” are very high and very steep and are evidence of glacial erosion. The hillsides are much lower and more gradual and can be a sign that the land is still forming. The valley bottoms are more likely evidence of erosion than actual mountains. As for the topography on the ridges are very rounded and the topography is the same throughout the entire area as there is no area with a variety of slopes with steep topography on it. In other words, the ridges are the same as they were always with no new topography. I should also say now that the flatness of the Sacramento mountains is not evidence of a lack of mountain development in the western United States. Instead, it is evidence of the fact that there is much less of the topography in the Sacramento Mountains than it can support. The topography in this area could support up to 200,000 or more trees and that is only for parts of the western United States and Canada. But that is not enough as it is very difficult to maintain a forest cover on this type of land. Most of the large forests in North America (the Southern Appalachian Plain, the North Rocky Mountains, and the High Cascade) all have a very high water table as that area is a very dry lowland where water can not really flow but collects. If you look at the map below (above) the elevation pattern across the whole of California is very similar.
