A number of important developments have occurred recently in Masonry here in North Carolina. Grand Lodges have been dissolved, and an election of the next Grand Master appointed. A General Lodge Conference was held in Raleigh in May and is being held in this month at the North Carolina State Grand Lodge in Chapel Hill. The following report was received to the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina September 17, 2002, A. William Moore. Secretary The Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina has been constituted in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Grand Lodge is held together solely through the annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. The Grand Officer for this Communication is the Grand Master, his Deputy being, of course, his Deputy-in-Charge (D.I.C.) who serves as the Grand Master's Representative in the Communication. Of course, the Grand Master is the Grand Master. He is duly elected annually. The officers elected in the past have been the Grand Master, his Deputy, and a Treasurer-General (S.G.M.) and a Treasurer (S.G.T.). The Grand Master's Deputy-in-Charge was an Elector; the Treasurer-General was a Grand Master, a General or a Deputy-in-Charge; and the Treasurer-General, a Representative of the Grand Lodge. This year there will be six officers elected by ballot. When it is their turn, they will be sworn in by their D.I.C. and receive the oath in the following words: “I, A. W., do swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Grand Master of my body politic and that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Government and to the Constitution of the United States.” This was the oath which was subscribed by every officer who took office and subscribed their names, and signed their names in a corner. The D.I.C. at some point will take the oath and sign the names in the same place. Then the D.I.C. will send the ballots to the Grand Lodge in Pennsylvania for printing. The ballots are prepared by the Grand Lodge in Philadelphia and are sealed by the Grand Master there for shipping. Those ballot envelopes in which the names of candidates are printed are put between the seals of the two Grand Lodges, so as almost to disappear.
