Students shared what it is like to be an African American student on a school campus across the country. Later that day, we held the sixth annual “Colleges & Universities for a Better America” conference. From the speakers at the conference to the student attendees, we had one clear message: Our country needs institutions that foster diversity, innovation, and inclusive excellence. The following week, we held a forum on Diversity at American Universities, a two-day event that explored the diversity on campus and the role that diversity can play as a driver of improvement in higher education. The day after that, two high-ranking administrators and two other students attended the annual conference on American Institutions, a meeting of educators devoted to the theme “Improving the Experience Among All Students.” The following week, we opened the annual Diversity Day event with a presentation by James Anderson, a former dean at Emory University, on the importance of diversity in higher education. ADOBE also sponsored the annual event for minority faculty, known as the Diversity Symposium. Here too, we made progress in terms of increasing faculty diversity in ADOBE's membership and in attracting new faculty members of minority background. However, the Symposium, which is the first of its kind at any university, did not bring together enough women of color to make meaningful progress. The day after a second appearance on campus, the President and I traveled to Chicago to address the Federal Reserve and the Black Chamber of Commerce. The two-day event, which was held July 16-17, focused on a range of topics and featured speakers including James Anderson, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Emory University; David B. Dinkins, University of Southern California president; James T. Jackson, former President of Northwestern University; and Sherry D. Smith, President Barack Obama's former Secretary of Education. I was pleased to report there were two positive outcomes from our discussion: Many more American students are studying in our universities today; and the Federal Reserve Board is developing a plan that will help us recruit more women and other minorities to work among the communities that are the key contributors to the nation's economic growth and quality of life. That week also included the ninth annual Diversity and Inclusion Fair, which took place on the grounds of ADOBEDIRECT. This event, designed to help schools understand their contributions to diversity and inclusion, featured a variety of speakers, from distinguished educators to local civil rights leaders.
