This book is a translation of a book edited by Peter E. Müller, Susan Rostov, and Günter S. Hole, published in 2004 (The Language of Languages, Elsevier, Amsterdam). Both books were written for a seminar at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. It is our hope that this book, although not a new volume, will serve as an example by illustrating our work and offering a better idea of what is involved in our work. It contains only the text of the original work with no mathematical analysis or linguistic analysis whatsoever. As it had to be translated to LaTeX we used the program BibTeX for its layout. This resulted in substantial differences in the look and feel of the book. The following table describes those differences. 1 In a small section where in the second version of this book, the title appeared in italics, there are no italics anymore, as the title has been shifted to the right to indicate a more natural presentation. 2 An introductory chapter had to be removed in favor of an introductory chapter with a different title and content, which appeared in the second version, so that we did not have to re-translate all the chapters. However, there are still some introductory chapters which are not translated, and which the reader should also be aware of. 3 In the first version, the chapters were divided into several subsections, and therefore we had difficulty in providing an overview, and the entire appendix with its information was not translated directly, but through the chapter summary. In the second version, this chapter summary is reproduced directly from the main text. 4 In the early chapters the text described various linguistic phenomena, mainly on different languages and their word order. A chapter of this kind is not translated directly, instead a sub-section is inserted, where the relevant data is presented in tables and graphs. 5 An early table in the second version, for example the table in the chapter 'On the lexically-similarity of Hungarian and Romanian words (Santos et al. 1995)' which provided a statistical description of the similarities between the Romanian language and the Hungarian language. 6 Due to the lack of time to translate, many examples of the statistical aspects which are not yet present in the first version (like, for example, an analysis of the comparative frequency of different nouns with different case in Romanian and Hungarian, or a study on the word order in Romanian and Hungarian) were not translated.
