In this article, we describe the surface behavior of these nanoparticles on a polystyrene (PS)-like substrate. On PS-like surfaces (Fig. 1) the surface behavior of particles is different depending on the size of the particles and their orientation on the surface. For large particles, the particles orient on the substrate randomly with an average orientation shift of ~1.2°. However, on smaller particles the particles orient themselves along the axis of the PS-like surface, and the average orientation shift is ~1.4°. On the smaller particles, a strong magnetic field is associated with the orientation, and it thus induces a nanoscale magneto caloric effect, which is then observed for small particles on small scales.
