The research investigated the attitudes of working adults towards new mobile devices such as smartphones. In particular, we compared the attitude of working adults towards smartphones to existing mobile phones (like Pas) and with existing mobile PCs (like laptops). For example, we asked respondents to rate how important a smartphone to them is, how many apps mobile phones can access for free, and how they use their smartphones to communicate and perform daily tasks. A total of 2,077 participants were interviewed for this research. We found the results to be in line with the “attitudes toward ubiquitous computing theory”: there was no significant difference in the opinions of smartphone owners and non-owners towards ubiquity in general. However, the mobile phone-owning respondents were more likely to feel more likely to be able to access a vast array of free and commercial apps. Keywords: ubiquity computing, ubiquity phones, public opinion INTRODUCTION As the number of mobile users continues to grow, people are coming to rely on mobile phones to conduct their daily activities. This is evident from the widespread use of smartphones in everyday life. Yet, it has also been shown that users of smartphones (computers that run a specific operating system) are also affected by the device in different ways. The smartphone, like the computer, can be used for communication, entertainment, browsing, checking email, playing music, and the like. These activities, however, do not have one and the same purpose. Moreover, the smartphones are often used for different purposes. The user might use a smartphone to perform everyday tasks and for fun. Alternatively, the smartphone user can make use of the device to manage their finances, organize their personal life, and more. In this paper, we examine the impact of ubiquitous computing on the attitudes of the population towards new devices, namely smartphones. The ubiquitous computing model posits that the smartphone is a realization of ubiquitous computing because, as described by the author, it is in a sense “invisible to the user.” The model also claims that people who rely on smartphones not only use them for everyday tasks without thinking about their use, but also are more likely to trust in the mobile phone's security. Our research explores whether, as this model has assumed, ubiquity has a negative impact on people's attitudes towards their mobile devices. We hypothesized that smartphones have a negative effect on public opinion as it relates to privacy and trustworthiness, and on trust in the security of mobile phone devices.
