Both sides need a holistic view in designing a supply chain process for optimal customer outcomes. In the last three years, supply chain and logistics executives have been involved in many discussions concerning the future direction of the supply chain industry and the challenges faced by companies dealing with both inbound and outbound movements of goods and services. Many participants have concluded outbound operations can have benefits for corporate strategic planning and profitability, while inbound operations could create significant challenges for companies, such as increasing logistics cost, reducing efficiency and reducing customer satisfaction. The aim of the project in the second half of 2005, designed for the Goteborg University is to provide supply chain management students with an overview of the main issues facing large companies, their supply chain processes and opportunities for improvement towards overall efficient supply chain management. The study should be used as a basis for further discussions. The outcome of this research program may be used for the supply chain management students to create and document alternative supply chain processes, based on the study findings; this could open a new chapter in the supply chain management education of the future.
