Parallel Parking can seem a little intimidating but with practice you'll get the hang of it This video will explain step-by-step how to parallel park your vehicle Parallel parking is one of the first things you'll do when you'll take your driving skills test The examiner is not only trying to see whether you can parallel park but parallel parking is a great way to evaluate how well you are able to manage the space around your vehicle The area where you will be tested on this skill will look similar to something like this Let's imagine that these barrels are other vehicles and you're looking for a place to park You want to find a space that you can safely get into Ideally one that is a few feet longer than your vehicle Are there any signs prohibiting parking there Is a fire hydrant or a driveway Once you have made sure of those things turn on your right turn signal as you approach the parking space Stop so that your vehicle is parallel to the one in front of the space you are going to park in Make sure there are 2 feet of space between your vehicle and the one parallel to you Check your mirror to make sure that the coast is clear behind you The first step is to get the back of your vehicle into the space Put your vehicle into reverse Turn your steering wheel sharply to the right and back slowly into the space As you are doing this keep an eye on the front passenger side window As soon as your passenger side door passes the back bumper of the car ahead of your space straighten the wheels and continue to back in straight When you have cleared the vehicle ahead of your space turn the wheel sharply to the left and back slowly toward the vehicle behind your space Be careful not to bump Pull forward if you are not completely in the parking space Turn your steering wheel sharply to the right and straighten your vehicle out, so that is in the center of the space You did it Turn on your left turn hand signal as you leave the parking space Remember you are entering the flow of traffic Your examiner will now give you instructions for the road portion of the test Remember when you are parallel parking it's important to be aware of your surroundings Check your mirrors often and take your time For more information visit Penn DOT's Driver & Vehicle Services website at wwwdmvpagov
