Because you are required to make estimated tax payments, this package is not necessary for taxpayers who will not withhold income taxes. If you have already figured out the total of your 2012 estimated tax payments, you should also figure and pay your estimated tax on line 21 or on line 22. Estimated tax payments can be made directly from line 22 and from line 21. These are the same options that you can use to determine your 2012 estimated tax on line 21. After line 22, you will figure out your estimated tax on line 21 or line 22. (Estimated tax payments on line 21 can be made from line 22.) If your estimated tax payments are less than half of your actual 2012 tax liability, you may want to pay yourself your entire estimated tax liability (as determined using the 2012 tax rules) (see the sidebar “Pay Yourself Your Part of Your Obligated Obligation.”) If you owe interest, interest will be charged interest against the estimated tax at the Federal rate. For information about interest and how to pay it to date, see Form 1099-INT. If estimated tax payments are more than half of your actual 2012 tax liability, you can ask the IRS for a refund (see the sidebar “Request a Refund on the Estimated Tax You Made in 2012.”) Generally speaking, you must figure and pay your estimated tax before the end of the 11th month following the end of the tax year in which you file your return, or you must file an amended return and figure and pay your estimated tax. Otherwise, interest and penalties can attach on that amount. In order to figure and pay your estimated tax on your 1040-ES, file Form 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, or 1040NR. Form 1040NR is not a substitute for Form 1040. Note. This summary is for information only. If you have questions about Form 1040-ES or your tax situation, talk to a tax professional. They can help you figure the correct information on your 1040-ES and figure any estimated tax payments. Estimated Tax Payments on your 1040-ES If you are required to make estimated tax payments due to a tax treaty between the U.S. and your country of citizenship, you can make that payment right away. You have to do this even if you only owe estimated tax or your entire payment is under 600 (about 1,500 if married filing jointly).

What is Form 1040 ES 2012?

Form 1040 ES reports estimated tax payments, broken into four installments, paid to the IRS for the current year. This form covers income earned from freelance work and other income categories requiring estimated tax payments. They are as follows: dividends, rent, retirement benefits, unemployment compensation, etc. Since estimated tax must be calculated for the current year, it is easy to make mistakes and enter wrong numbers. Such errors may eventually result in underpayment and penalty. To avoid confusion when calculating estimated tax, taxpayers can follow the previous year’s taxes. Also, make sure to check out the Form 1040 ES instructions as a guide for calculating the estimated tax.

Who should file the IRS Form 1040 ES 2012?

The Tax Form 1040 ES is an Estimated Tax Form. It is created for self-employed individuals, small business owners, freelancers, and independent contractors. These are individuals who rarely have income tax withheld from their earnings and those who satisfy the following criteria:

  • You’re expected at least $1,000 in tax for the current year
  • The estimated withholding and credits are less than 90% of the expected tax or 100% of the entire tax liability recorded in return for the previous year.

A taxpayer doesn’t have to pay estimated taxes if:

  • They were not asked to pay taxes for the previous year
  • They were US citizens or residents in the previous tax year
  • The previous tax year was no less than 12-month long.

What information do you need when you file the Tax Form 1040 ES?

In your 2012 Form 1040-ES, include your personal information and the estimated amount of payment you owe for the quarter. To make your filing as accurate as possible and avoid fines, use your previous year’s tax return and compare it against the current year’s numbers.
