Overall, the conclusions are, though, that the best available evidence is consistent with the position that it is unethical for hospitals, medical schools, universities, and/or healthcare systems to participate in or continue to participate in the donation and transplantation of organs from living individuals. There are a number of ethical concerns that must be considered when deciding whether these practices are ethical. These concerns cannot be completely resolved through the application of ethical principles nor will no system be perfect. Rather, they must be addressed by thoughtful deliberation on both the medical and legal aspects of the situations. The authors therefore recommend that hospitals, medical schools, and universities, as well as healthcare systems, consider ethical concerns as they develop and maintain donation and transplantation policies.
