These resources would be built on Open Source software frameworks such as Open Directory Project (ODP) and Maven and would be used to perform searches, build relationships, and retrieve information in a Semantic Web based framework. This paper explains and assesses the feasibility and results of this research. It also describes the results of a second version of the project in the context of integrating the resources from the Biology Consortium with the existing database in the Semantic Web system, Semantic Web Knowledge base. A second version of the project was implemented from August 2007 to February 2009 and was deployed at the Mass Semantic Web Research Center (). It was tested by using the Semantic Database (BSD) and its Schema and Relationships Framework as a standard library for access to biological resources. Results of the project include: · a successful integration with BSC (BSD, B-Sens) in the Semantic Database · the creation of the Biophysics Resource (BSC) as a reference tool for the Biophysics and Bioenvironment Group on the Open Resource Server. · availability of the Biophysics Resource at no charge at the Open Resource Server () · a successful integration of BSC and the Biophysics Resource in the Semantic Web framework · the creation of a new repository of resources using BSC — the Biology Resource (B-Sens, BSC) · documentation of the work done and results presented in the project (e.g., the Semantic Web project guide, the B-Sens project summary, and the Biology Consortium project report, published in Bioinformatics. 2009) We describe in detail the methods used in the project in the following sections. 2.1. Overview of Goals of the Project We started the Biological Consortium (B-Sens) in the hopes of providing resources to the BI OCP. These resources would represent a comprehensive and highly scalable Semantic Web search and resource interface for biological data. The Semantic Resource (BSC, B-Sens) was initially released in August 2001. It contained information on the top 1000 biological research papers and a set of data related to the top 1000. The Biophysics Resource was released in 2004, with information on top 750 biological literature based on the biophysics database GEPAN and the associated databases. This resource became highly popular among the scientific community, and has recently been available in two editions.
