. Have no single point of failure and no single point of consensus. The design of the SIRP paradigm is based on a novel mechanism of consensus construction that enables the construction of an efficient, yet robust, distributed protocol stack. The project was started in 1999 at the University of California-Berkeley in a department with an interest in the future Internet. In 2003 the Berkeley SRT project was terminated and the original developers have moved on to other projects. The current work in our group is a follow-on effort, called Project INRIA, which will include similar but modified work, at a different institution, with the goal of replicating the Berkeley work. This research is supported by the National Science Foundation under grants #SES-1044346, #SES-1149444, and #SES-1147877. For an overview of the main SIRP architectural approaches and their characteristics, see Pick, O'Brien, and O'Reilly [2003] and Pick [2004] from which the general description of the SIRP paradigm can be obtained. 10.2. Interactions: What's next? Invite Interfaces in the Life Sciences International Journal of Applied Systems Science (IAS) 2009, 2, 1-3 Pick, O'Brien and O'Reilly [2004] 1 Achieving Scalable, Distributed, Fault-Tolerant Networks Using Message Transport in the Presence of Distributed Communications Failure George C. Polygon Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2009 Abstract Invite implements a system that combines a distributed routing infrastructure and distributed messaging over a network-centric service. The system was developed to address the issue of unreliable and incomplete communication networks in bioinformatics, biopharmaceutical research and clinical trials. It allows users to implement distributed systems (such as Web and mobile applications) that can tolerate a wide range of communication failure scenarios, from localized failures that can be mitigated by re-establishing communication through peer systems to large-scale failures that might take months or years to re-establish communications. The system allows the deployment of fault-tolerant distributed messaging mechanisms to avoid the risk of network downtime in high-volume, large-scale deployments. The system is built from three components. The architecture has a distributed messaging layer, which provides the application with a messaging service for communicating with peers.
