Mr. Foley is a Member of the Council of the American Institute for Chemical Engineers (ALICE) and is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society, and is also a member of the Technical Advisory Board of the National Energy Technology Laboratory. In 2013, Mr. Foley received the US Department of Energy's “Breakthrough of the Year” Award for developing a low-cost process for producing hydrogen directly from water. The hydrogen produced is then used to perform high temperature supercritical carbon dioxide fusion. His team has recently completed development of a prototype hydrogen extraction and electrolysis plant. The demonstration plant will produce approximately 6% hydrogen by electrolysis using H 2 as a feedstock. Mr. Foley has served on the board of directors for several non-profit organizations. He is past president of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. He is a member of many professional organizations and holds degrees and professional licensure in engineering. Mr. Foley was born and raised in Boston, MA in a very active family; his father, Bill Foley, is a retired electrical engineer, and his mother, Helen, is a physicist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where Steve's maternal grandfather, Frank G. Dennison, is now Chief of the Nuclear Chemistry Group. Mr. Foley's early education included study at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth; followed with courses for the Bachelor of Engineering and the Master of Geosciences on the Harvard University campus. In the early 70s, Mr. Foley graduated from Harvard with a B.S. in Geology and an M.E. in Environmental Engineering. In 1986, Mr. Foley joined the faculty of University of Massachusetts Amherst as a lecturer in Nuclear Engineering; over the ensuing decade, he went on to build the first commercial Geosystem Control Facility as Associate Professor in 2006. He also taught the Nuclear, Chemical, Geological and Electrical Engineering programs at the Mass Amherst School of Engineering. After retirement, Mr. Foley continued his interest as an educator and as a researcher in some of the most exciting scientific research for decades.
