children without health insurance are less likely to have up-to-date vaccinations and tend to have more school absences than their classmates who do have health insurance many of these uninsured kids in Florida are eligible for low or no-cost health insurance through Florida KidCare Melanie Hall from the Florida KidCare outreach project is here to tell us more Melanie welcome thank you first of all how many children in Florida receive health care through kid care well actually a few weeks ago we had our 2 million mark of kids that are enrolled in Florida KidCare so that was an exciting point for us here in Pinellas Pasco Hillsborough the Tampa Bay region about 270000 kids are enrolled in Florida KidCare so we're we represent about 18 of the enrollment at this point in terms of the Tampa Bay area so we've certainly made great strides the downside frankly is that there are still about 500000 kids in our state that do need insurance coverage and it's estimated probably about 50000 or so here in the Tampa Bay area that could still benefit from this coverage so there's still work to be done it sounds there is still work to be done how would I know if my child qualifies for for kid care basically almost every child qualifies what you know differs from family to family is I'm how much you would pay so depending on what program you were enrolled in and at what level that would you know sort of equate to what that family is responsible for paying so if a family applies and they are enrolled in the Medicaid program then there is no monthly premium and they still receive those benefits and there is a little bit more of a renewal process that's every six months as opposed every 12 months if a family is enrolled in the subsidized program of healthy kids insurance that could be anywhere from 15 to 20 dollars a month or if they don't qualify for subsidized they always have the option of doing full pay which is 121 dollars a month for medical coverage then you can add for 133 dollars total a month you can add the dental coverage as well so everyone is eligible it's at what point you're eligible in terms of what the parents and family's responsibility is to to participate in the program can we explore that just a little bit my rudimentary understanding of kid care there's different programs offered through kid care can you just sort of highlight them and maybe touch on their differences sure there are four different programs that are under the umbrella of Florida KidCare the first one is as we spoke about Medicaid which is you know a federal program that gets a state subsidy as well and those that is really for those families that are qualify is strictly from financial eligibility then there's healthy kids and that has two components one is the Medicaid program which is for kids 0 to 4 and then and that also has a subsidized program or a full pay that full pay option because the children that age tend to use an...
