These insurance companies aren't so much selling insurance products, but are creating an industry of their own--a new world of insurance. This article explores the evolution of “independent technology” and how it has resulted in the formation of an emerging insurance industry. This year alone, in the U.S. alone, hundreds of inventions have been licensed by the independent inventors' movement. This was a good example of how the Internet, in the form of the Internet Software Consortium (ISC) has facilitated the development of what he calls independent inventors. The CSI is a consortium of the world's major software companies. As well as creating new software for many technologies, it also created a network of small, commercial development centers that developed new software applications to fit the needs of each independent developer. By developing new applications, companies developed their inventions and patents that are often used by other companies to develop their products. Because the CSI and its software developers maintain a strong commitment to independent inventors in the world of software, new technologies to meet the various demands of an increasing insurance industry were constantly being developed. The new technologies were often “filling in” the gaps that the new insurance companies were not able to fill. As a result, independent inventors have been getting large portions of insurance patents. Bake states that: “Over 90 percent of all newly issued American insurance patents are now in the hands of independent developers.” The Independent Inventors Association has estimated that, over the last twenty years, independent researchers have received about 75 percent of all insurance company patents. In 1991, only about 10 percent were. In 1990, insurance developers received 10 percent of the total, but that has changed. Of the 20 billion in new insurance policy business in the U.S.
