Electrochemical reactions are called electrochemical, because electrons can easily move from one atom to another because there is an attractive physical force called the Coulomb barrier between the two atoms. For a chemical reaction in which electrons are being transferred (such as an electrolysis reaction), the electrochemical potential also requires the existence of the Coulomb barrier for a potential difference to exist, a phenomenon called the Coulomb force. The Coulomb force is the fundamental force (or force potential) that holds ions together. Although ions are very small, electrochemical chemistry is involved in the formation of the elements.
