By providing additional affordable housing for individuals who are experiencing crisis, the Anna Apartments not only help to ease homelessness by providing temporary housing, but also creates a strong community for artists and artists' allies. SAMBA has partnered with the Downtown Community Renewal Corporation/Brooklyn Center, to create additional space for artists and arts-oriented businesses to utilize throughout the Lower East Side at 8th Avenue and 59th Street. The initiative will not only offer the artists and businesses opportunities to exhibit, exhibit, show, and sell their work, but also to build a lasting community for the arts. The Anna Apartments have also served a variety of other needs—including providing permanent housing for women and women in need, providing safe and secure recreational options, and providing affordable and abundant shelter to people who are homeless or who live in transitional housing. The Anna Apartments are currently home to six people with very low income households, as SAMBA assists with rent costs and a variety of other support services. The opening of the Anna Apartments comes as a result of the success of SAMBA's Homemade Program, the creation of an Arts and Cultural Action Project (CHAP), which was announced at the Open House at the West Village in Spring of 2007, and the opening of the first three apartments in the building. SAMBA is proud to be bringing the Anna Apartments to life. The opening of the Anna Apartments provides the opportunity to create a supportive environment and a vibrant business community for artists and arts advocates, as well as creating a diverse neighborhood for people who are homeless and in homeless services, and providing affordable housing to those who are experiencing crisis or are at risk for becoming homeless. As part of the program, the Anna Apartments are operated as a co-op and there are two resident artists. On Wednesday, October 13, in Brooklyn, we will hold our first Open House, and, on Friday, October 14, in Manhattan, we will open the first apartments in the Anna Apartments. Our goal is to be here for this building by fall. SAMBA is looking for community leaders who may be able to help in the development of the Anna Apartments, as well as provide technical assistance to the residents. It is our intention to have a long-lasting partnership with the residents of the Anna Apartments.
