Citizens and Global Citizen! Welcome to 2008! Here's the latest report from City — the 2007 Year in Review. The report documents many of the great achievements and successes in 2007. One of our most prominent successes in 2007 was the establishment in Washington of the Global Citizenship Program at City and other U.S. cities. We developed strategies to integrate the mission of Citizenship beyond the United States into more than 50 of America's largest local, state, and national community service organizations. Together, these organizations represent more than 400 million men and women throughout the United States. Our Global Citizenship project is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Recovery First Grants, and the U.S. Department of State's Democracy Fund. City and our colleagues in the public and private sector are using this innovative program to improve their services to their constituents. Among the great successes of this program in 2007, City and local agencies in Washington, including a citywide Community Police and fire-fighting committee, adopted the first universal policies for reporting sexual abuse of minors. The Committee also adopted the first rules to ensure that public safety and public health will be protected when public school teachers report possible child abuse. In December 2007, Citizens for the Protection of Foreign Aid (CPFA) organized an international summit to discuss the need for stronger international development efforts. The event is dedicated to ending “the cycle of poverty, the cycle of conflict, the cycle of war, and the cycle of disease.” The Summit brought together experts from the United Nations, the European Union, UNICEF, and civil society groups from all over the world. At the closing event, the CPA presented to the UN Secretary General a package of proposals designed to enhance international development efforts in three key areas of foreign policy: conflict prevention and control, improving humanitarian aid, and building a fairer environment for business. These proposals are an important basis for the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2008, a conference whose main theme is “Sustainable Development by 2020.
