The challenge of reaching other planets without running into each other first appears to be unsolvable. The Three-Body Problem states that the kinetic energy of an object (such as a spaceship) travelling in one direction will add to that of its orbiting partner in the same or opposite direction no matter how fast they move. The amount of energy that results in the interaction of the objects is dependent on their mass and velocity. A spaceship travelling very fast on its own will have less interaction with its companion than if it were travelling far slower. To put it into perspective, a spaceship traveling on its own at 15 times the speed of light will, in all likelihood, meet its companion at one of the nearest star systems. It will travel at about 17500 km/sec (9100 miles/sec) per second, so it will cross the stellar disk in 1.1 days. A spaceship travelling 20 times the speed of light would also meet its companion within 1 year. The physics of the Three-Body Problem states that the energy transfer from the slow to the fast component of motion in a situation where they meet is proportional to the square of the speed of the spacecraft from the point of view of the planet, and that the total energy received from the planet during its orbit is proportional to the square of the distance between the spacecraft and the planet. This means that an average distance of 1.1 light years is required for an average interaction time of 1.6 times the standard orbit time (the time it takes an object orbiting a planet to travel one light year). An average interaction of 40 light years is required. Since light takes 7.8 minutes to travel from one planet to the other, the average interaction time is about 8.0 minutes per light year. Although the Three-Body Problem cannot be solved for very close stars yet, the problem does not appear to be insolvable at the most distant stars. The reason why is that the stellar systems that exist at these distances are already far beyond the reach of our instruments. To be able to examine the Three-Body Problem, a spacecraft must be able to stay above the planet's atmosphere due to the gravitational force acting on the spacecraft. The air around the planet and the atmosphere of the spacecraft would create a drag force on the spacecraft, which would slow it down significantly. A spacecraft with little or no air drag would escape the gravitational pull of the planet.
